Halal groceries in Greater Montreal: what to know
About a hundred halal grocery stores and markets are listed: 30 in Montreal, 16 in Laval, 5 in LaSalle, 5 in Saint-Léonard and 4 in Longueuil, with the rest spread across the east end of the island, the West Island and the South Shore.
Two profiles sit side by side. The neighbourhood grocery, often with a butcher counter — 22 listings combine both — and a shelf of Middle Eastern, Lebanese or Maghrebi products; and the supermarket, eleven on the list, which sets aside a halal section next to everything else. A few addresses add catering, a pastry counter or delivery.
Eight groceries in ten are marked “verified halal” and 18 “to be verified”. More importantly, 32 are flagged as partially halal: the store also sells products that are not, and 27 sell alcohol — the typical supermarket or corner store with a halal aisle. That flag is on the listing, and it changes what you can pick up without asking. Muwali does not certify anything, and a section's status can shift with the supplier.
Opening hours are available for eight listings in ten, a phone number for two in three and a website for half. Groceries that deliver or prepare orders say so on their listing when they manage it themselves.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I buy halal meat in Montreal?
At a dedicated butcher (see the Butchers category) or at one of the 22 groceries on this list with a butcher counter. Montreal has 30 halal groceries and Laval 16.
Do supermarkets carry halal products?
Eleven supermarkets are on the list, most flagged as partially halal: a dedicated aisle or counter next to non-halal products and, often, alcohol. The listing says so.
What does “partially halal” mean?
The store sells halal products, but not only. Read the labels and, for meat, ask about the supplier.
Are there halal groceries in Laval?
Yes, 16 listings, several with a butcher counter. LaSalle, Saint-Léonard and Longueuil have four or five each.
